Nursing Care and Treatment of Difficult Ulcerated Haemangiomas - by Sister Jane Linward and Dr Samira Syed of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. Four example cases are presented.

Helen Griggs - My Story - Helen was born with a haemangioma behind her knee which ulcerated and quickly became more and more painful. Helen received convential treatment from a general hospital but the knee continued to deteriorate. It was only when the correct treatment was applied by a specialist birthmark unit that Helen's knee started to respond.
This story amply illustrates the need for more information about the correct treatment of birthmarks amongst the general medical profession. It should also give heart to all parents who are tentatively starting the birthmark treatment process to ensure that your child is seen by someone who really knows about birthmarks.

The Disfigurement Guidance Council also publish a booklet called About Birthmarks which has some useful information on the different birthmark types.
