Funding

This page contains information about Funding

Why do we need Funds?

We receive no official funding and survive purely on the very kind donations of our members. The costs of running the group are ongoing and we are constantly looking for funds to cover the costs of:

  • Newsletter Production and Distribution
  • Correspondence
  • Medical Conferences
  • Marketing and Publicity
  • Counselling
  • PO Box operation
  • Family Days
  • Charity Events
  • Technology Support

However this is only half the story as more funds are needed to develop the group so that:

  • Essential phone and counselling support can be provided
  • Much needed research can be funded into the different birthmark types
  • Public awareness of birthmarks can be raised through marketing and publicity campaigns

The aim of the group is to operate as a fully functioning charity and provide immediate information and support to any family that needs it.

Funding achievements to date

The unbelievable efforts and generosity of some of our members have enabled the group to develop and make progress towards our mission statements.

OUR GRATEFUL THANKS TO:- All who contribute to the Group whether it be financial or through time given.

In particular we would like to thank:

Birthmark Support Group Fundraising Webshop

We all know that there are shopaholics amongst us and that the internet is a great channel for indulging this hobby. Well now there's a great way to practice your past time and get retailers to contribute funds to your favourite charity.

The Birthmark Support Group now has a Webshop. The Webshop contains links to a huge range of retailers. As long as the retailers are linked to from the Group's Webshop then commission on any sale will automatically be paid to the Group. Many of the retailers offer special internet prices and some are exclusive to the Webshop.

All you have to do is shop. Here's the link www.buy.at/birthmarksupportgroup

There's an option to make the link your home page and this will help you ensure a contribution is made to the Group everytime you 'go shopping'. The A-Z tab on the home page contains the extensive list of retailers contributing to the scheme.

Please let friends and family know about the Webshop as well so that they can shop and help with group's fundraising at the same time. Many thanks.

Birthmark Support Group DVD

This major project by The Birthmark Support Group aims to raise the awareness of birthmarks amongst the public generally and the medical profession in particular. It contains 3 professionally produced films, one aimed at the medical profession, one as a resource for secondary schools and one for general information, particularly for parents of new babies with birthmarks.

The films are presented by broadcaster Paul Heiney and include contributions from our patron, Esther Rantzen. The DVD will be accompanied by an 8 page A5 brochure. The cost of producing and distributing 40,000 DVDs is a major call on our limited funds and we ask that you help us by 'buying' DVDs, perhaps to give as gifts, particularly this Christmas. You won't actually receive the DVDs but

£3 will place one DVD in a doctor's surgery or a school

£5 will place two DVDs or £10 will place 5!

Better still give your money by way of Gift Aid and we can reclaim the tax you have paid and place even more DVDs! In return for your donation we will send you a certificate giving the number of DVDs placed as a result of your gift. To order your DVDs please either save, print and complete the form and return to BM The Birthmark Support Group, London, WC1N 3XX OR

go online to www.justgiving.com/bsgdvd. You can then use your credit card to 'buy' DVDs but please then email chairman@birthmarksupportgroup.org.uk to say how many gift certificates you would like and for how many DVDs.

Annual Ball - Crawley Ridge Infant School Association

May 2008

On the 3rd May this year Crawley Ridge Infant School Association (CRISA) held a charity fundraising event at the Frimley Hall Hotel. The school PTA (CRISA) holds an annual ball, proceeds from which are divided between the school and a nominated charity. This year the BSG was their nominated charity as one of the pupils at the school has a Port Wine Stain birthmark and has been undergoing laser treatment this year. Her mother is a BSG member and also an active supporter of CRISA.

As is always the case, CRISA were keen to have a representative from their nominated charity attend the event as their guest and Stanford Jeffrey (a BSG member with a port wine stain) very kindly offered to represent our cause and say a few words. He will, apparently, do almost anything if it involves a free meal!

Funds are raised for the event not only through ticket sales but also from an auction that takes place on the night. Naturally, there are many other manner of ruses employed to encourage people to give generously, with the sale of raffle tickets being just one such example.

The event room and tables at the hotel were decorated by a team of ladies from CRISA and the effect was both stylish and impressive. The auction items were varied in the extreme, ranging from a day’s accompanied fly fishing through to an exclusive visit to the air traffic control tower at one of London’s prestige airports.

The event was very well supported by a host of dedicated and committed parents, supporters and friends of CRISA and the entertainment, which included a live band, was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. In fundraising terms, the highlight of the evening was the auction, most ably ‘called’ by Ken Presland, a former Army Regimental Sergeant Major and not a man to trifle with!

Just prior to the auction those attending were reminded of the BSG element of their charitable provenance for this event. Stanford took the opportunity to briefly outline the incidence of birthmarks amongst the general population as well as to highlight the lack of research and accurate information available to medical specialists in particular. Not surprisingly, mention was made of the new BSG DVD being distributed to schools, GP practices and other medical specialists and the very valuable contribution that CRISA funds would make towards the ever increasing campaign of awareness that has now begun in these key areas.

All present were warmly thanked by Stanford for their very kind support and their most generous donations towards BSG and its ongoing work. The ball was obviously a social success but encouragingly, a fundraising success too, generating a total of £2000, of which £1000 has subsequently been donated to BSG. We owe a very special thanks to Samantha Doyle. Thank you Samantha. Well done CRISA! Many, many thanks!!!!!

Dance Shows by Gillies Mar-Jan Stage School

July 2007

The Gillies Mar-Jan stage school performed a dance show to raise funds for a number of charities in July 2007. Members Christine Bleasdale and Louise Heyes who are Mums to Jacob Bleasdale and Lauren Heyes respectively got involved and promoted the Birthmark Support Group as one of the beneficiary charities. Louise plus Lauren's sister Eleanor and Jacob's sister Eve took part. The show raised a staggering £900. Well done to everyone involved.

Here's a picture of Lauren and Jacob proudly presenting the cheque.

Puddleducks Nursery Charity Fundraiser 2006 20 mile sponsored walk around Evesham and surrounding area

Sunday 22nd October 2006

Tired wet and weary at the finish in the Amber Bar

Cheque presentation on behalf of Puddleducks Staff and friends to Miss Scarlett ClarkePctured above are a very tired and wet Puddleducks team along with Mark Frost from the Evesham Fire Brigade at the end of their 20 Mile sponsored walk in aid of the Birthmark Support Group and Great Ormond Street Hospital. The walk around Evesham and the surrounding villages out as far as Pebworth started in high spirits early on Sunday morning. Despite the forecasts it stayed dry and fine until the last 5 miles, then the heavens opened and all the walkers had to endure torrential rain all the way back through Offenham, Badsey and back to Evesham.

The whole event raised in excess of £1000 which together with additional funds raised at a ladies evening contributed £1500 in total to Birthmark support group. Many Thanks to all those who took part in the walk, it was a tremendous effort! And a big thank you to all those who contributed sponsor money, it is going to a very worthy cause.

Pauline Roche Sponsored wear your Wedding Dress to work Day

Julia & Brian Higgin's Sponsored Weight Loss Challenge

Sunday 14th May 2006 to Sunday 17th September 2006

Julia and Brian's son Cameron has a rare syndrome Macrocephaly-Cutis Marmorata Telangiectitisa Congenita (M-CMTC) with right-sided hemi-hypertrophy. As part of this syndrome Cameron has 70% coverage of his body in birthmarks.

As an innovative way of raising money for the Birthmark Support Group they decided to take on the challenge of losing 2 stone each in weight between the Fun Days on Sunday 14th May and Sunday 17th September 2006. That was 18 weeks to lose 4 stone between them.

Here's a snap of Julia and Brian with Cameron at the start of their challenge at the Birmingham Fun Day. By the time the Chigwell Funday came round (see Fun Day page for details) they had lost 46.5 lbs between them.

Brian had lost 16 lbs and Julia had lost 30.5 lbs. This means that they didn't quite achieve their target but it is still a fabulous result and of course they are both feeling so so much better. It was harder for Brian who works away quite a bit and does strange hours which meant that controlling what he ate and when was a little tricky.

The result is that Julia and Brian have raised a fantastic £776 for the group. They would like to thank everyone that has made a pledge on the justgiving website www.justgiving.com/juliahiggins or has completed a sponsorship form - your support in raising funds for the group is truly appreciated.
